Recommended Vaccines for Peru
✅ All Travellers
- Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever, COVID-19, Influenza, MMR, Routine vaccines — Ensure all are current.
⚠️ Most Travellers
- Yellow Fever — Recommended for travellers visiting jungle/Amazon regions (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata, Manu). Not required for Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, or Lake Titicaca (above 2,300 m). Orleans Travel Clinic Pharmacy is a certified Yellow Fever vaccination centre.
- Hepatitis B — Recommended for adventure travellers and long-stay visitors.
- Rabies — Recommended for travellers to rural areas and jungle regions. Post-exposure treatment may be unavailable outside Lima.
- Dengue — Risk in lowland areas and the Amazon basin. No dengue vaccine is currently available in Canada — bite prevention is essential.

- Cholera — Consider for travellers visiting areas with poor sanitation.
- Malaria prophylaxis — Risk in Amazon basin and jungle areas below 2,000 m. No risk in Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, or the Andes highlands.
Travellers’ Diarrhea
Risk: High throughout Peru. Your pharmacist will advise on precautions and prescribe a standby antibiotic.
Malaria
P. vivax and P. falciparum in the Amazon basin below 2,000 m. No malaria risk in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, or Lake Titicaca.
Altitude Illness
A major consideration. Cusco sits at 3,400 m, Lake Titicaca at 3,810 m. Your pharmacist can prescribe acetazolamide (Diamox) and discuss acclimatization strategies.
Other Health Risks
Dengue, Zika & Leishmaniasis
Dengue and Zika risk in lowland areas. Pregnant travellers should seek counselling before travel. Leishmaniasis (cutaneous) risk in jungle areas.
Medical Care
Lima has good private hospitals. Cusco is adequate for basic needs. Amazon medical care is very limited. Emergency evacuation insurance is essential. Emergency: 105.
