Recommended Vaccines for Kenya & Tanzania

✅ All Travellers

  • Yellow Fever — Required for entry if arriving from an endemic country. Recommended for all travellers to Kenya (risk below 2,500 m). Orleans Travel Clinic Pharmacy is a certified Yellow Fever vaccination centre.
  • Hepatitis A — High risk throughout both countries. Recommended for all travellers.
  • Typhoid Fever — Strongly recommended. High risk from contaminated food and water.
  • COVID-19, Influenza, MMR, Routine vaccines (polio booster recommended) — Ensure all are current.

⚠️ Most Travellers

  • Hepatitis B — Recommended for most travellers.
  • Rabies — Strongly recommended for safari travellers and those visiting rural areas. Post-exposure treatment may be unavailable outside Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
  • Cholera — Consider for travellers visiting areas with active outbreaks.
  • Meningococcal — Consider for rural travellers, especially during the dry season.
  • Malaria prophylaxisEssential for virtually all travellers. P. falciparum (the most dangerous type) predominates.

Travellers’ Diarrhea

Risk: High throughout Kenya and Tanzania. Strict food and water precautions essential. Your pharmacist will prescribe a standby antibiotic.

Malaria

Predominantly P. falciparum. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential for virtually all travellers.

Kenya: Risk throughout the country below 2,500 m, including all game parks and coastal areas. Lower risk in Nairobi and the highlands.

Tanzania: Risk throughout the country below 1,800 m, including Zanzibar, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Kilimanjaro foothills.

Other Health Risks

Altitude Illness

Relevant for Kilimanjaro climbers. Acetazolamide (Diamox) and proper acclimatization are essential for summit attempts.

Schistosomiasis

Avoid swimming in Lake Victoria and other freshwater bodies.

Medical Care
