⚠️ Travel Advisory — Severe Shortages (March 2026)
Cuba is experiencing worsening shortages of fuel, electricity, food, water, and medicine. All Canadian airlines have suspended direct service to Cuba until further notice. Bring adequate prescription medications and consider emergency evacuation coverage.
⚠️ Chikungunya Outbreak (2025–26)
Cuba is experiencing an ongoing chikungunya outbreak. The IXCHIQ vaccine (single dose, ages 18+) may be recommended for travellers with prolonged stays.
Recommended Vaccines for Cuba
✅ All Travellers
- Hepatitis A — High risk throughout Cuba, including deluxe resorts.
- COVID-19, Influenza, MMR, Routine vaccines — Ensure all are current.
⚠️ Most Travellers
- Typhoid Fever — Recommended for stays over 1 month or adventurous eating habits.
- Cholera (Dukoral) — Recommended for higher-risk travellers.
- Hepatitis B — Recommended for those receiving medical care abroad or long-stay visitors.
- Dengue — Risk year-round. No dengue vaccine is currently available in Canada — bite prevention is essential.

- Rabies — Recommended for rural travellers. Post-exposure treatment in Cuba may be limited.
- Chikungunya (IXCHIQ) — Consider for prolonged stays.
- Yellow Fever — Proof required if arriving from an endemic country.
Travellers’ Diarrhea
Risk: High — including at deluxe resorts. Up to 50% of travellers affected. Your pharmacist will advise on precautions and may prescribe a standby antibiotic.
Malaria
No malaria risk. No antimalarial chemoprophylaxis required.
Other Health Risks
Dengue & Zika
Dengue present year-round (peak May–Oct). Zika risk exists. Pregnant travellers should seek counselling before travel.
Medical Care
Facilities in poor condition and lack basic supplies. Travel health insurance with emergency evacuation strongly recommended. Emergency: 104.
